Our goal is to provide training and support that fosters adaptive mindsets and equips you with the skills to thrive, utilizing your existing vision.

Meet the Team

At the Center for Independence, we are dedicated to empowering individuals as they adapt to life with vision loss. We offer a comprehensive range of services, activities, and events, both on-site and within the community, designed to foster practical skills for day-to-day life. Our primary mission is to help our clients build confidence and embrace their independence. We understand the importance of this journey and are committed to providing the support and tools necessary to enhance the daily lives of the individuals we serve.

Jennifer Shook 

Meet Jennifer Shook:

Jennifer Shook is a proud long-time resident of Mesa County, where she has made a significant impact in her community over the years. She graduated from Mesa State College (now Colorado Mesa University) in 1996 with a Bachelor of Science in Adaptive Physical Education. Jennifer began her career at Center for Independence as an Independent Living Specialist, where she ran a vibrant recreation program for people of all abilities.

With nearly 30 years of experience, Jennifer has been a fierce advocate for individuals with disabilities, taking on various roles throughout her career, including Group Home Supervisor, Host Home Provider, Grant Writer, Disability Law Colorado Advocate, Arc Mesa County Advocate, and Veteran Choice Program Manager.

Jennifer is thrilled to return to Center for Independence, where she can combine her passion for advocacy with her dedication to serving veterans.

In her spare time, Jennifer enjoys crafting and cherishing moments with family, friends, and her beloved pups. One of her favorite quotes reflects her positive outlook on life: “Whether you think you can, or think you can’t, you’re right.” — Henry Ford.
