Veteran's Choice Program

Our Veterans Choice Program is a Self-Directed Program that pays for qualified veterans to receive services and supports to help them maintain independence in their own homes. This program is designed to provide support specifically for the Veteran and no one else. We assist the Veteran in becoming an employer of record who is responsible for hiring, training, scheduling and signing timesheets for the workers providing the care. They may hire friends or family members who are familiar with the needs of the Veteran and they will be given a budget to pay for the care identified in their care plan. The Veteran must be receiving health care from a VA Medical Center that contracts with Center for Independence.

Jennifer Shook

Meet Jennifer Shook:

Jennifer Shook is a proud long-time resident of Mesa County, where she has made a significant impact in her community over the years. She graduated from Mesa State College (now Colorado Mesa University) in 1996 with a Bachelor of Science in Adaptive Physical Education. Jennifer began her career at Center for Independence as an Independent Living Specialist, where she ran a vibrant recreation program for people of all abilities.

With nearly 30 years of experience, Jennifer has been a fierce advocate for individuals with disabilities, taking on various roles throughout her career, including Group Home Supervisor, Host Home Provider, Grant Writer, Disability Law Colorado Advocate, Arc Mesa County Advocate, and Veteran Choice Program Manager.

Jennifer is thrilled to return to Center for Independence, where she can combine her passion for advocacy with her dedication to serving veterans.

In her spare time, Jennifer enjoys crafting and cherishing moments with family, friends, and her beloved pups. One of her favorite quotes reflects her positive outlook on life: “Whether you think you can, or think you can’t, you’re right.” — Henry Ford.

Hello! My name is Stacy Grunow, and I am a proud wife, devoted Christian, and loving mother of four wonderful children. Family is at the heart of everything I do, and I cherish the time we spend together, exploring new places and making lasting memories through our travels.

I have a deep appreciation for nature and all the beauty it has to offer, which inspires me to connect with the world around me. My passion for service shines through in my work at Center for Independence, where I have the privilege of serving the veteran community through the Veteran's Choice Program. Hello! My name is Eric Mendez, and I have a profound appreciation for our veterans, rooted in my family's military legacy. My dad and brother served in the armed forces, and I am deeply grateful for their sacrifices and the sacrifices of all who have served.

As I prepare for retirement, I am committed to giving back to my community, particularly to those who have served our country. I recognize the urgent need for veterans to receive the care and support they deserve, and I consider it an honor to be part of Center for Independence and its Veteran's Choice Program, where I can actively contribute to their well-being.

Family is incredibly important to me, and I cherish every moment spent with my grandchild and my soon-to-be children. They inspire me daily and play a pivotal role in shaping who I am. Hello! My name is Stephanie Cook, and I am a proud mother of two beautiful daughters and a delighted grandmother to four wonderful granddaughters.
